Your first paper session

Create a strategy, watch its activity, and end the session with a clear understanding of what happened.

Before you begin#

Sign in to the SSAlgo app. Check your account's available strategy types and active-algorithm capacity. Paper mode simulates trades; it does not submit real orders to your broker.

You still need supported market data and a valid instrument. A paper session without a usable quote may wait rather than trade.

1. Choose a strategy#

Open the algorithm list and choose Create Algo. Select an available exchange and strategy. For an introduction to the indicator builder, read 143.

Give the algorithm a name you can recognize later, such as “Paper practice”. The name does not determine the strategy's behavior.

2. Work through the builder#

  1. Market and Instrument: select the market, underlying, and execution instrument.
  2. Strategy and Signal Rules: choose a timeframe and the strategy-specific inputs.
  3. Trade and Order Configuration: review direction, contract, size, and order settings.
  4. Risk Management: read the unit next to every target, stop, and limit.
  5. Schedule and Execution: select Paper and set the trading window.
  6. Review and Create: check the summary before saving.

See the creation guide for explanations of each step.

3. Start and observe#

Find your saved algorithm and choose Start when you are ready to begin the paper session. Open its monitor. Confirm the displayed mode, instrument, session state, and any messages.

A running session does not mean a trade must occur immediately. It may be waiting for an eligible signal, data, or the entry window. Read start and stop before repeating a start request.

4. Inspect the result#

When activity appears, compare the signal, order, and position. They represent different stages. Record the settings you used so you can explain the result later.

Paper fills are simulated. They do not demonstrate that a live broker will accept or fill the same order.

5. End the session#

Choose Stop, read the confirmation, and wait for the monitor to settle. Review the final state and any remaining positions rather than relying only on the success message.

You have completed the walkthrough when you can identify the session's mode, explain its settings, locate its orders, and confirm its final state.

If no trade appears#

Check the schedule, quote availability, signal condition, risk limits, and any status message. Use strategy troubleshooting before changing multiple settings at once.
